When my husband and I remodeled her home, we at an extra room on to the house so we could have a formal dining room.

I’d always dreamed of having a formal dining room.

I had a new wood table made to fit my dining room. My next step, was to find wooden chairs with leather backs and seats. I was told that I could easily have the chairs made to go with the dining table, but I needed to find someone who would upholster them for me. My son-in-law helped to make the wooden chairs, and he also knew of a good upholsterer who would create the leather seats and back for me. I was sure that by christmas, I would have the eight leather chairs that I wanted to go in my formal dining room. My sister told me that she thought leather chairs didn’t belong in the dining room, but it wasn’t her house. I didn’t say anything to her about how God her home looked after shehired the interior decorator. I didn’t think she had a right to tell me what would and would not work in my formal dining room. When my chairs were done, and my table was set up in the dining room, I was thrilled. My new wood dining table and leather chairs, was exactly what I wanted. My husband asked if the dining room pleased me, and I gave him a hug. I asked how he felt about my leather chairs, and he told me they reminded him of his grandmother’s formal dining room.

I have never needed to use a plumber for anything in my life.

In fact, I have used a handyman or my friends and family for any plumbing issues I may have had.

For instance, when my garbage disposal stopped working, I called my brother, and he was able to fix it for me. When my dishwasher broke, I contacted a handyman service, and the repair guy fixed the issue. But I have never had an issue that required a plumber until now. My drain in my tub was clogged and I could not get it to unclog itself. Even after many attempts of using a plunger and some liquid substances made to unclog drains. Well, I called my brother, and he wanted no part of it and he suggested that I contact a professional to help with the issue. At first, I believed I needed a handyman, but when I searched the internet, a plumber was the best professional to fix a clogged drain. After I searched for plumbing service near me, I found a few companies with excellent reviews. Most had 4.7 or above with over 300 customer reviews. However, there was one company that had a 4.9-star rating from over 500 customers. Naturally, I clicked on that company, and I usually read the bad reviews because that gives me a better idea of the type of customer service this plumbing company provides. The bad review was because someone didn’t show up to perform the service. However, based on the response from the company it was a big misunderstanding. Well, I was extremely happy about the reviews for this plumbing company, so I chose them to unclog my drain.

My environmental studies group gathers together a few times a month to discuss different topics that contribute to the sustainability of the planet.

There are so many things to cover, so we often try to maintain a single theme for each month.

This month we have been discussing air conditioning and heating solutions. Last week one of our members offered a great presentation on hybrid water heaters. I really didn’t know much about them before because my only experience with heaters was a standard central heating system. Apparently, hybrid water heaters are the most efficient option for heating systems because they don’t actually expend energy to create heat. They move heat from a different source, like a heat pump, rather than work hard to create heat. This drastically decreases the costs of maintaining a hybrid water heater as well. It wouldn’t be an environmental group if we didn’t discuss the impact on the environment, which really decreases with a hybrid water heating system! Even though the water tanks have a great environmental impact, they can reduce the annual carbon footprint of the average consumer. Two of our group members actually have hybrid water heaters and had nothing but good things to say about it. I’ve mentioned the heater to my wife to see if we’d like to explore installing one for ourselves too. I think this group has the potential to make some really amazing and sustainable changes through all of the initiatives we have put together. We’ve only been meeting for about a year, and things are really moving in a positive direction.

I’ve noticed over the last few years how much the retro and vintage look have come back into style.

Everyone wants to look original, but in the effort of obtaining vintage items, you kind of become unoriginal.

I think that this trend will continue for a while, and I can get down with that. My dad works in the air conditioning business, and he has even noticed the retro trend taking over in that industry. Most people used to enjoy central heating, but lots of younger folks are opting for ductless mini split heat pumps. I think many people are moving into historic homes and neighborhoods that have older air conditioning and heating systems. Many older homes actually don’t have air vents or ductwork. Instead of installing a central system, people are opting for the ductless heat pumps since they don’t require any ductwork installation. But I think a huge bonus of it is that they offer that vintage and retro look to any room. Ductless heat pumps are an eyesore and traditionally don’t match anything else in the room, but I guess that’s what makes it retro and cool looking. Ductless mini splits are actually a cost effective and energy efficient option though, so I’m not mad that it’s becoming more popular these days. Central heaters tend to be costly and waste more than they provide. It’s enlightening to see how this generation is automatically becoming more sustainable simply because they are trying to copy what people used to do. It kind of makes you think of the phrase “don’t fix what isn’t broken”.

I think there is always multiple ways to approach something, or go about an issue.

So many people become frustrated because they can only see the flaws in the single plan their mind generates.

They don’t take the time to explore other options or possibilities that lay ahead of them. For example, my old roommate swears up and down about how great space heaters are. Sure, space heaters are great for getting warm in an area that doesn’t have whole home heating. But space heaters aren’t the only type of heater out there. When his space heater broke, I honestly thought this man was going to die. He saw no other option to fix his heating dilemma other than to spend the money on another space heater. He didn’t even consider that instead of spending more money on another heater that is really a temporary solution, he could be using something that is a little more permanent. I told him about ductless heat pumps, and I think that he looked at me as if he was a deer in the headlights. The idea of installing a heater really shook him to his core. Ductless heat pumps are great though because they are perfect for homes that don’t have any air vents or ductwork. If you are already strictly using space heaters, it may be something to consider. There’s always another option available, but you may not be educated on it to know yet. It’s okay to learn more and upgrade your opinions as time goes on. That’s simply a part of life.

My dad is always looking to make changes in his life. Last year he decided he wanted to learn how to sail boats, so he began an apprenticeship at our local marina. Then he decided he wanted to learn how to roller skate, so he started taking lessons. Now he is committed to learning more about his home air conditioning and heating systems. This has led to a myriad of plans and renovations on his current heating system. He’s always had a central heater, which I think has been just okay. I’m not a huge fan of feeling a huge gust of heat if you are standing in the direction of an AC vent. I also have awful allergies, and I don’t believe the central HVAC helps at all. He started learning about radiant heated floors, and I think he’s actually considering having them installed. I don’t know if it’s the best decision because it seems like it’s more cost efficient to install heated floors in a brand new house. My dad is very adamant about installing the radiant floors now, but I told him he should wait until he moves into his new house next year. I guess the radiant floors would increase the value of the property before he installs it. Maybe when I get to that point I will understand a bit more.

Just the other day I was walking in my neighborhood and saw a van for air conditioning and heating quality assurance that used a special computer system. I’m not sure how great the computer checks the air conditioner compared to an actual air conditioning technician, but I’m sure someone who is really smart figured it all out. If you live in a warm state, you’ll definitely want to make sure your air conditioner is working properly. And if you live in a cold state, you’ll want to be sure that your heater is running smoothly as well. The best thing you can do is set up an HVAC service plan with a quality assurance company who can use both people and computer programs to double check, and possibly triple check that everything is working as it should. I would hate for someone’s investment to go to waste earlier than it should, so I always recommend keeping up with things like that.
