The summertime in the South can be quite unforgiving.

I have been in the routine of changing at least once a day because I can’t help but sweat through all of my clothing.

I don’t even do labor intensive work, but just stepping outside for a few minutes is enough to bring on the sweat! I honestly feel the worst for those that are air conditioning and heating contractors. Since everyone is using their air conditioning on repeat right now, business is really booming for them. Every single day I see multiple air conditioning company vans, whether that be in my neighborhood or parked outside of different commercial businesses. Everyone needs new air conditioners because they neglected to take care of them before the weather got this hot. I also mean myself, because I had to replace my entire HVAC at the beginning of summer. I really felt bad for the AC technicians because it was really hot that day and the temperatures inside of my garage were almost one hundred and twenty degrees. When you are installing an entire HVAC system, that requires a lot of patience, attention to detail, and strength. I’m sure they must be used to it after having to do it so many times, but I couldn’t believe how well they installed the HVAC without a single peep complaining. People like that deserve all the money and praise. They keep us regular folks calm and happy on a daily basis! I am thinking about putting together some care packages and dropping them off to those overlooked local heroes.

Ever since I was in middle school, I’ve been passionate about the environment.

I helped start an environmental club in middle school, and became the president of our high school chapter.

Now that I’m studying environmental science at university, my passion is rising to a whole deeper level. Our class is working with local air conditioning and heating companies to conduct some interesting studies that may potentially have great benefits on our neighborhoods and local impact. We found that most homes in the area that our university is in uses central AC and heaters. Central HVACs can be a convenient option for homeowners, but they aren’t really cost efficient and don’t leave the greatest environmental impact. We are working with contractors to learn more about different heating systems since we are approaching the winter season. They’ve taught us about hydronic heating systems and how they operate on water and radiant technology as opposed to air vents. Because they don’t require the same level of upkeep as HVACs do, they are a very attractive option for homeowners. Hydronic heating systems could lower the costs of energy for the entire city if just twenty percent of homeowners replace their central air conditioning and heating systems with them. We are hoping that this heating system proposal will make its way to our local governor so we can have some support to push this initiative. THe whole process has been a little intimidating, but everyone in our class is so passionate that it all feels worth the feelings of discomfort. I’m really excited to see where this goes.

I’m a huge advocate for learning new things and expanding the way we approach simple tasks. I think there are a million different ways to approach something, or even attack a solution for an everyday issue. Having a growth mindset is an important characteristic that every human should strive for. Even when it comes to something as simple as air conditioning and heating systems. Most people tend to stick with the same type of air conditioner and heater that they were used to growing up. I know that I stuck with central air conditioning and heating because that is what my parents had in our house, but I later found that central heaters irritate my allergies and sinus problems. At first I thought I would take the loss of not being able to breathe with my central heater, but then I did more research into other heating systems and realized I didn’t have to suffer if I didn’t want to. I ran into another type of system called hydronic heating which basically runs off of water to fuel itself. Hydronic heating is incredibly energy efficient and quiet in the home. What I like most about it is that instead of air vents that tend to push out dust and other particles that may be too tiny to be filtered, it operates on a radiant system which just expels the heat into the room. Even though I didn’t make any drastic changes right away, it was cool to learn about something new and how it could benefit me and my health.

My dad has always been pretty handy.

He is a plumber and really enjoys improving on his skills through different classes and online courses.

Some people just really like to work with their hands. He also uses a lot of math and engineering skills to figure out his projects. Even though he is handy, he knows his limitations and admits defeat when it comes to air conditioning and heating systems. There is something about an HVAC that doesn’t quite click on his mind the way that a toilet might. Because of that, he has a really extensive relationship with his air conditioning technician. Whenever the technician comes by, my dad picks his brain as much as he can so that he can try and improve on those handy skills. If there’s anything my dad is pretty reliant on, it’s having an HVAC service plan in place with your air conditioning technician. You never know when things could go wrong with an HVAC, so it’s important to have a plan for maintenance together so your technician can make sure that everything is working properly. My dad’s technician comes by every six months, and he’s never had a major issue with his HVAC as a result. Most people won’t call AC companies until something breaks, or there is a big problem. That can also be very costly, so having a service plan not only preserves your HVAC but also helps you reduce costs. My dad is a true lifelong learner, and I’m really grateful to be able to learn from him. He’s a great guy.

My mom has always been the type of person that believes she is always right.

Even when it came to remembering the name of our favorite chinese restaurant, she always swore it was china wok when I knew for a fact it was china house.

She simply doesn’t accept being wrong. Well the past few weeks she has had me looped up in her plan to sell her HVAC. She claims that selling the HVAC on her own would be better than selling it back to the company because she can get more money for it. I tried to tell her that because of the age of her HVAC system, it is very unlikely that someone will want to privately purchase it. Not to mention it is winter, so really nobody is trying to purchase a used HVAC right now. She has me posting to online social groups every day to promote this HVAC. We’ve had about two serious inquiries, but once I tell them how old the HVAC is, they pretty much stop replying. I’m getting so tired of it, so I told my mom that I’m going to get a quote from the air conditioning supplier to see how much she can get for the HVAC plus the pick up for it. At this point, I’m doing all the work for this stupid thing, so she’s going to accept whatever money she can get. I don’t know why she won’t just admit that she messed up by not selling it back the second she got her replacement. It’s too much work to do that kind of thing on your own.

I suddenly lost my job a few weeks ago.

This was really challenging for me because I have a lot of events and bills coming up that I need to take care of.

On such short notice, I knew that finding a job that was similar to what I once had would be difficult, so I spread my options wider. I ended up finding work as an HVAC repairman apprentice. I had a little bit of HVAC experience as a kid because my dad was a technician for a while and I would help him out on jobs. Air conditioning work isn’t really what I had in mind at this point, but I just had to take what I could get to support the bills. One pleasant surprise about working in the air conditioning business at this time was that technicians get paid really well during the summer months. The weather is super brutal where I live during the summer, so everyone’s air conditioning is booming all of the time. This increases the demand for service repairs, so we are pretty much up and running in the old van all day long. And it’s so incredibly hot doing all of that manual labor, so the costs of labor for technicians tends to be a little bit higher. Plus the air conditioning company itself will typically provide bonuses to the technicians for having to work so much in the heat. I’m not saying my physical wellbeing can be bought with money, but it definitely helps. I’m thankful to have a job either way.

Last summer I started working with my friend’s dad’s air conditioning company.

I really started because I needed extra cash, and the summer is a pretty booming time for air conditioning technicians, so my friend offered me the gig.

I’ve continued doing it throughout the year because I’ve found HVAC installations to be pretty relaxing. I’ve come to learn a lot about air conditioners and their many elements. I had no idea there were so many different types of air conditioners aside from central systems. The second most popular option I think we install are multi split air conditioners. Those AC units are pretty cool because each one can have a customized temperature setting. We’ve done a few commercial air conditioning installations and upgrades as well, and those are always pretty challenging. I remember when I first started and the van that we were using had zero air conditioning. I couldn’t keep from joking the entire day about how an HVAC van should at the very least have the best air conditioning available, just for us to be sitting in the muggy heat. It was a really fun memory, even though it felt miserable that day. I was just getting used to the job at the time. Now I am even starting to train other people, so I feel like this has been a really good fit for me. You never really know where something will lead you. It’s good to keep your options open and maintain good connections. I know that this job has been a saving grace for me.

My new wood dining table & leather chairs, was exactly what I wanted

When my hubby & I remodeled her home, we at an extra room on to the home so we could have a formal dining room, but i’d typically dreamed of having a formal dining room. I had a new wood table made to fit my dining room, my next step, was to find wooden chairs with leather backs & seats. I was told that I could absolutely have the chairs made to go with the dining table, even though I needed to find someone who would upholster them for me. My son-in-law helped to make the wooden chairs, & he also knew of a fine upholsterer who would create the leather seats & back for me. I was sure that by christmas, I would have the more than seven leather chairs that I wanted to go in my formal dining room. My sibling told me that she thought leather chairs didn’t belong in the dining room, however it wasn’t her house. I didn’t say anything to her about how God her lake home looked after shehired the interior decorator. I didn’t suppose she had a right to tell me what would & would not labor in my formal dining room, but when my chairs were done, & my table was set up in the dining room, I was ecstatic. My new wood dining table & leather chairs, was exactly what I wanted. My hubby asked if the dining room gratified me, & I provided him a hug. I asked how he felt about my leather chairs, & he told me they reminded him of his Grandmother’s formal dining room.
