I’m worried that when they all get their licenses that they’ll want cars by default. Now that the weather is getting increasingly colder by the week, we are running the furnace more than ever before. They all want the house to be as warm as a sauna, but they don’t understand how much money it costs to do this on an hour by hour basis. Sometimes they will try to change the thermostat settings when they think I’m not looking, so that’s why I went out and bought a plastic lock box to put over the top of my HVAC thermostat. If my wife or I want to adjust the temperature in the house, one of us can do this individually. The colder it gets, the more and more they will all want the heat on even if we can’t afford to run it to that degree.

Last week, I was chatting with my dad, and he said that he scheduled an air duct cleaning with a local company.

Of course, I asked him why he needed his air ducts cleaned. He mentioned that his friend had gotten his ducts cleaned and he recommended that my dad do the same. Well, I told my dad that air ducts should be cleaned on an as needed basis. Meaning, if there is a pest problem then cleaning the air ducts is recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency. The agency also recommends cleaning the ducts if there is a buildup of mold. In addition, if you notice excess debris buildup on air vents, then you should consider cleaning the air ducts, but if none of these conditions exists, studies have shown that cleaning air ducts are not necessary. Of course, it’s up to the homeowner because they should be able to determine what is best for them. I have never gotten my air ducts cleaned because my HVAC technician has never mentioned it as something that I need to do. My dad is still going through with getting his air ducts cleaned, which is fine. But I have told him that once he cleans it now, that he wouldn’t need to do it again unless there is a serious problem. I mentioned to him that if his HVAC technician hasn’t said anything about his air ducts then they are functioning fine. At least he will have cleaner air ducts and perhaps better air quality, but the studies haven’t necessarily proven that.

I am sending my son to an overnight Summer camp next week.

He wanted to go because his best friend would be there as well, so I agreed.

He has gone to day camp before where I was able to pick him up at the end of each session. But overnight is a whole other level as he has never spent an extended amount of time away from home without me being present. This camp is great because they will be learning some team building techniques, he will go horseback riding, play soccer as well as other sports, and he’ll also have a chance to fish and enjoy other water recreational activities. So, he will be busy, and I am sure he will have a great time. Prior to booking, I was a bit concerned about the sleeping conditions. I wanted to make sure that the facilities were comfortable and clean. I also wanted to make sure that the cabins had air conditioning. Lately, the weather has really gotten hotter outside, and I wanted to make sure that at night he wasn’t sleeping in the heat without A/C. My son gets a heat rash when he is exposed to too much heat, and this was a concern of mine. Heat rashes aren’t terrible, but I don’t want my son to ignore it because it’s an indication that his body is overheating. Anyway, I am comfortable knowing that the cabins have air conditioning. That gave me some peace knowing that he won’t be sleeping in the heat, and I will be packing his heat rash cream for him to use just in case.

I live in a 3-bedroom house alone and I am loving it. My daughter finally moved out last month after she decided to move back home after college. I thought that once she went away to school that she would be out of the house for good. But she decided that she wanted to come back home and so she was living here for about 3 years before she finally moved out. I must admit that I do miss having her around the house. On Fridays, we used to have movie nights, where we ate popcorn and drank red wine, until we fell asleep on the sofa. I will miss those small moments, but I am glad that I have my house to myself. With the Smart thermostat, I can control what sections in my house need to be heated or cooled. This has come in handy because there are times during the day when I don’t go upstairs, so that area of the house was completely empty. And when my daughter was here, she spent a lot of time in her room, and she realized that there was no need for the A/C or the heat to be running in the other rooms, while they were empty. I am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to technology, but I highly recommend getting a Smart thermostat if you’re someone who lives alone in a multi-level or larger house. It will certainly be of benefit to you.

I am not saying that air quality isn’t important, but I am not sure if that was necessary for them to install. If that air purification system is guaranteed to kill 100 percent of viruses, and fully remove all pollutants from the home, then perhaps I would see the value in that. I have never used an air purification system because I believe my HVAC is efficient enough to keep the moisture or humidity levels down as well as keep my indoor air clean. The most important thing that you can do to improve the air quality in your home is to change your air filters often. The cleaner the filter, the cleaner the air will be in your home. The recommendation for changing air filters varies depending on what you use as a source. I have seen some HVAC companies advise to change the filters every 30 days, and I have seen where the recommendation is every 90 days. Of course, it depends on the type of unit you have and the type of filter you are using. If you are not sure which guideline to follow, it is best to ask your HVAC technician as they should know the type of filter that your unit uses. Personally, I change my filter every 60 days, and I have never had an issue with the air quality in my home. So, instead of purchasing an air purifier, I will just keep changing my filter regularly.

I live in a 2-bedroom duplex, and I love it here.

I don’t own the home, but I am friends with the landlord. Well, he’s more like family, he’s really good friends with my dad. And when he heard I was looking for a space to rent for a few months he did not hesitate to offer this space to me. I love this duplex because it has a small yard where I can sit and hang out from time to time. I have a covered swinging bench that I purchased, so it provides a space to write and work during the day. While sitting in the yard, I noticed that the A/C condenser is in direct sunlight. There is a small bush around it but it’s not providing too much shade. And with the temperatures heating up the way that they have been, I am wondering if that heat doesn’t create extra wear and tear on the unit. Or cause it to lose efficiency, which means I would end up paying more than I should to keep the place cool. So, I did a quick search and found that these outside condensers are pretty durable. They are built to withstand harsh weather like storms and heavy rain. However, I discovered that they are the most efficient when the temperature is 100 degrees or below. Well, lately the temperature has been in the high 90’s, which means that this unit being in the direct sun could be losing some efficiency. Perhaps, I could ask my dad’s friend to build some kind of shading for the condenser unit.

I am sure that there is more that’s being done but I can’t remember the rest. Oh, I do also receive a complimentary car wash which is always nice. Typically, they place a sticker on my windshield that provides the date and mileage for my next oil change. My car also has a reminder that is set for every 5,000 miles. To be honest, if I didn’t have those reminders, I would probably lose track of when I should get my oil changed. This happens with my HVAC system, I never remember the last time I had it serviced. It’s recommended that we should always get our HVAC serviced at least once per year. Some companies recommend doing it twice, once in the Spring and the other in the Fall. Getting your HVAC system checked will prevent any unforeseen issues from happening. The HVAC technician will be able to clean the coils, and the system to make sure that it is operating up to efficiency standards. So, if you’re like me and forget about getting your HVAC serviced, perhaps set a reminder on your phone or on your smart home devices. Or what I have been doing lately is once my HVAC technician completes the maintenance, I schedule the next one with him right away. So, between setting the appointment with the HVAC guy, setting the reminder on my Smart devices, I will never forget to get my unit serviced.
