Our pop was an exceptionally good cooling and heating expert, although my sister and I never knew much more than that.

This man was a grumpy old person by the time we were conceived, and never friendly towards us.

That’s why it was so odd when he reached out to my sister last year and asked if she’d help him craft his memoirs. He had come across some of her journalism articles from school, and thought she was the right fit to help him tell his tales. At first my sister thought memoirs about the heating and cooling industry would be dull. She could not have been more wrong. We came to learn that our pop was the first person in this area to employ female AC specialists. In those days, ladies were only allowed to be secretaries or office drones, and not expected to labor with any furnaces. It was not “ladies’s work” at the time, however our pop got a job application from a young woman who was absolutely skilled with heating and cooling units. Pop broke the “gender line” and made her a full heating and cooling specialist, something that a lot of the male employees tried to veto. Pop told them all to work this woman as a heating and cooling expert of equal standing to the men, or they wouldn’t have a job. He lost twenty great heating and cooling specialists that day, he said, however substituted them with new, better people, including a lot more ladies. That first female heating and cooling specialist would later become our nana which was something we never knew.

Hilda was aware that her Grandfather was a respected HVAC company owner, but she never knew more details of his life.

He was a grumpy seasoned man by the time she was born, and never took the time to be friendly towards Hilda.

In the beginning, Hilda thought memoirs about the Heating and A/C industry would be dull, but she could not have been more wrong. It turns out that her grandfather was the first man in this locale to hire female Heating and A/C techs. By that time, women were only allowed to be secretaries or office drones, and not allowed to work with the furnaces. It was not “women’s work” at the time, but Hilda’s grandfather got a task application from a young woman who was very skilled with gas furnaces. Hilda’s grandfather broke the “gender line” and made the young woman a full heating upgrade tech, something that a lot of the male employees detested. Her grandfather told them all to accept this young woman as a heating expert of equal skill to the men, or they would be fired. He lost twenty nice heating techs that morning, he said, however updated them with new, better people, including a lot more young women. That first female heating expert that Hilda’s grandfather hired was very well known to her, because she was her grandmother.

We call home what used to be a church.

Actually, it was going to be a church but it never got finished so they never held any mass there. For some duration, there was a local congregation that sunk cash into building this large place. The cash ran out, the congregation changed to other churches, and this place just sat here for about 10 years. Finally a local business person purchased it at auction, did the remaining construction, and started renting out rooms for any person who needed it. There is finally working plumbing and electricity, but there is a “bring your own a/c” policy because the place has no weather conditions control in it. Building the former church was halted before an Heating & A/C business could even come in and start work, so there is no HVAC duct set here. The carpenters built in the space for air ducts and vents, but nothing further took place. There is no capacity for weather conditions here. Gladly, in our day and age of Heating & A/C technology, it’s not a necessity to have a central system, because portable systems are cheap and widely available. Almost any Walmart or Target will have a portable a/c for under $200, and while these portable devices won’t cool off a house, they can chill off a room abruptly. We aren’t sure how long we will live in this rental space, but it has character, and now that we have a cooling system, we suppose we’re starting to care about it. If we move out, we will provide our little a/c to one of the other residents that find getting one out of reach financially.

For 5 years a local congregation poured money into building this sizable place. The funds ended, the congregation moved onto other churches, and the building was abandoned. Finally someone grabbed it at auction, completed the walls and floors, and began renting out rooms for travelers or small income earners. There is working plumbing and electricity, but there is a “bring your own HVAC system” policy because the place lacks climate control in it. Construction was halted before a Heating and Air Conditioning corporation could even get started, so there is no HVAC duct to set up central HVAC. Construction workers built in the section for HVAC ducts and vents, but that step never got to take place. There is no capacity for climate control here, but with advancement in Heating and Air Conditioning technology, we don’t require a central system. Portable systems are everywhere at affordable prices. Many Walmarts or Targets will have a portable HVAC system for under several hundred bucks. While these little machines won’t cool off a big home, they can cool off a room pronto. We aren’t sure how long we will live in this flophouse, but it has character. Since we have a cooling system, we are enjoying our stay. When we leave, we plan on gifting our little HVAC system to another individual that can’t afford to buy one.

Later a local lady bought it at auction, did the walls and floors, and started renting out rooms in a boarding house setting. The space now has working plumbing and electricity, but there is a “bring your own air conditioning” policy because this structure has no temperature control in it. Construction stopped before an Heating & Air Conditioning company could even get started, so there is no air duct in it. The carpenters built in the space for HVAC ducts and air vents, but that step never took effect, so the space can’t handle temperature control. Thankfully in the age of Heating & Air Conditioning technology, Melissa doesn’t need a central system, because portable systems aren’t expensive and are widely available. Most Walmarts or Targets will have a portable air conditioning for two or three hundred dollars. These little machines won’t cool off the whole property, but they can cool off a room suddenly. Melissa isn’t sure how long she will live in this place, but it has character, and now that she has air conditioning, she is starting to care about it. When she checks out, Melissa plans to give her little air conditioning to one of the other residents that can’t afford to get it.

One afternoon while on my way back from work, I observed a odd noise coming from my engine and the temperature gauge on my auto began rising higher than I had seen before.

My instinct told me to pull over because the last thing I needed was the engine to boil over and burst into flames.

I pulled over and called my dealership and my repair representative was alarmed, and he proposed that I should have the automobile towed over instantly. I obliged and upon inspection they discovered that I had a bad radiator, and that could have been a major issue had I continued to drive. A similar occurrence happened with my Heating as well as A/C unit. Last Summer, as I sat outside in the big backyard, I observed a odd noise coming from my a/c. I can’t explain what it was, perhaps a loose metallic rattling, but it was a noise that was unofficial to me. The air conditioning system was still on, and nothing seemed awry, although I kept my ears and eyes open and sure enough, later on that evening, the air conditioning system stopped cooling my house. I instantly called my Heating as well as A/C service tech, and he was able to put me on the schedule for the next day. He inspected the problem and found a faulty capacitor, and he replaced the section and said I should be all good to go. Well, he was right, except a month later, I heard another strange rattling noise. Apparently, this time the fan motor burned out and that could have caused a house fire. My Heating as well as A/C repair serviceman commended me for acting that quickly, and though this issue was extravagant, he said I potentially prevented a greater catastrophe. Just like with my car, I have received that it is wise to pay attention to the strange sounds that my Heating as well as A/C unit makes, it could potentially save you from major unit repair costs.
