Our uncle had read some of our journalism work from college and liked it

We knew that our uncle was a successful AC business owner, but we never knew much more than that.

  • He was a grumpy aged man by the time we came around, and wasn’t kind towards us at all.

This made it all the more surprising when our uncle reached out to us some few months back and asked if we’d help him write his memoirs. Our uncle had read some of our journalism write ups from university, and thought we were the right option to help him tell his story. At first we thought memoirs about the Heating and A/C industry would be dull, but we could not have been more wrong. It turns out that our uncle was the first guy in this section to hire female Heating and A/C techs. Before that point, ladies were only allowed to be secretaries or office drones, and not permitted to toil with the oil furnaces. It was not “ladies’s work” at the time, but our uncle got a job application from a young lady who was unquestionably skilled with heating systems. She broke the “gender line” and made her a full heating replacement tech, something that a lot of the male employees didn’t like. Our uncle told them all to accept this lady as a heating expert of equal laying to the men, or they could leave. Our uncle lost twenty nice heating techs that day, he said, but upgraded them with new, better people, including a lot more ladies. That first female heating expert that our uncle hired was unquestionably well known to me, because later she’d be my aunt!
