You have to bring your own air conditioner

I live in what used to be a church.

Well, it was going to be a church but it never got finished so they never held any services there.

For several years there was a local congregation that sunk money into building this huge place. The money ran out, the congregation moved onto other churches, and the place just sat here for a while. Finally someone bought it at auction, finished the walls and floors, and started renting out rooms like a boarding house. There is working plumbing and electricity, but there is a “bring your own air conditioner” policy because the place has no climate control in it. Construction was halted before an HVAC contractor could even get started, so there is no ductwork in it. The carpenters built in the space for air ducts and vents, but that step never got started, so there is no capacity for climate control here. Luckily in our day and age of HVAc technology, there is no need for a central system, because portable systems are cheap and widely available. Almost any Walmart or Target will have a portable air conditioner for under two hundred bucks, and while these little machines won’t cool off a house, they can cool off a room quickly. I don’t know how long I will live in this flophouse, but it has character, and now that I have a cooling system, I think I am starting to like it. If I move out, I will give my little air conditioner to one of the other residents that can’t afford to buy one.
