My sister was wrong to think memoirs about heating and cooling would be boring
Our pop was an exceptionally good cooling and heating expert, although my sister and I never knew much more than that.
This man was a grumpy old person by the time we were conceived, and never friendly towards us.
That’s why it was so odd when he reached out to my sister last year and asked if she’d help him craft his memoirs. He had come across some of her journalism articles from school, and thought she was the right fit to help him tell his tales. At first my sister thought memoirs about the heating and cooling industry would be dull. She could not have been more wrong. We came to learn that our pop was the first person in this area to employ female AC specialists. In those days, ladies were only allowed to be secretaries or office drones, and not expected to labor with any furnaces. It was not “ladies’s work” at the time, however our pop got a job application from a young woman who was absolutely skilled with heating and cooling units. Pop broke the “gender line” and made her a full heating and cooling specialist, something that a lot of the male employees tried to veto. Pop told them all to work this woman as a heating and cooling expert of equal standing to the men, or they wouldn’t have a job. He lost twenty great heating and cooling specialists that day, he said, however substituted them with new, better people, including a lot more ladies. That first female heating and cooling specialist would later become our nana which was something we never knew.
