Good writing comes from experience. You need passion, you need skills with words, of course, but if you don’t have any life experience then you don’t have anything to say. You have to understand something to have insight about it, so people who never experience life don’t have very much insight to offer. I have come to understand this, and started drawing from my own past to enhance my stories. I have worked a lot of jobs over the years, so I pour a lot of these memories into my latest scripts, especially my years working as a heating and cooling repair tech out in the country. There aren’t a lot of crazy things that happen during heating and cooling repair jobs, but every once in a while there will be. One time a guy got so worried about his prized pigs overheating that he brought all fifteen of them into his air conditioned farmhouse. Another time I arrived for some A/C repairs to find an elderly man and woman sitting in the living room stark naked. They said it was so hot that this was all they could do for cooling themselves down. A few years ago I got called to a house to fix an old window-mounted air conditioner, which hadn’t been used in some years. I found a small family of squirrels living inside the housing of the A/C unit, and I told the owner the squirrels had squatters rights and it was their air conditioner now. I don’t know if HVAC work will make a good movie, but it might.

I am a park ranger, but I like to think of myself as more than that.

I am a public servant in the truest form of the phrase, because my only goal is to make the forest safer for folks to visit. We mostly do hiking and camping in these parts, with very limited hunting and fishing for the locals to preserve the local flora and fauna. That said, the winters get pretty brutal, and that is where my job is most vital. I maintain a dozen different cabins scattered throughout the five hundred acres of land here, in case people get lost. In each cabin are two different heating systems, as well as some bottled water and canned food. The first heating system we have in each cabin is a fireplace, although the make and model of the fireplace varies wildly. Next to each fireplace we maintain a healthy pile of firewood, enough for two days worth of heat, as well as matches and a lighter. In addition to that, we have a little space heater in each cabin, and these are a very new addition that I am excited about. None of the cabins have electricity ,of course, so these space heaters are operated by a hand crank. If you crank the space heater a couple hundred rotations, it will generate heat for an hour or so. These space heaters are a great addition, because I have encountered people before that don’t even know how to start a fire. These space haters are basically idiot proof, which is just what we need out here.

Think small, people, I cannot stress this enough.

We are a nation of hoarders and collectors, who need bigger and bigger houses to hold all of the pointless stuff that we accumulate. After my divorce, I went through a major “purge” phase, but the funny thing is I never got out of it. After getting rid of 95% of my possessions, I felt no need to get new ones. I began a more spartan life, starting with the simple, austere cabin by the lake I moved into. I don’t have a central air conditioner, but I have learned that I don’t need one. Natural ventilation and the winds of the woods will keep my place temperate for most of the year. It may stay around 80 or 85 degrees for weeks on end, but once you get used to living without AC those temps aren’t so bad. For the winters I have a small wood burning furnace at the edge of my kitchen. I also have an electric stove for cooking, but this furnace is old enough that it can be used for cooking, for heating water, for doing laundry, as well as keeping the place warm. I also have a space heater, just in case, but I haven’t had to use that in a couple of years thanks to my old stove. The biggest adjustment to living without a climate control system is just getting over yourself and losing the habit of insisting on perfect comfort at all times.

So maybe I did squander all of my stimulus money on stupid stuff, so what? What did you do with the check sent to you in the middle of the pandemic? I won’t justify my bad decisions, but I think I had an understandable reason for making them. I was cut off from the world for months, and as a woman with a very active social life, this was hard for me. I was most certainly not in my proper frame of mind when the check went right into my bank account. They say “easy come, easy go” and instead of sinking the money into a new HVAC system I went to the online dispensary and bought as much weed as I could. Fast forward to the beginning of summer, my air conditioner still doesn’t work, and I am out of weed again. The next three months are supposed to be the hottest summer on record, so getting a cooling system has now taken priority over getting stoned. There is no way I can possibly afford a new HVAC system unless the president starts kicking out checks again. Instead, I am trying the cheap option, and getting a small, portable cooling unit for Walmart. The online reviews for these machines, which are the same size as a space heater, are not great, but I think it will be better than nothing. Each of these little AC units is good for cooling down one room, so while it won’t replace my central system, hopefully it will help me survive the summer.

It can sometimes get to be a real hassle when birds do their duty on your central heating and air conditioning system as if it has a sign on it that says “public rest room for birds”! The other thing that is an annoyance is when bees decide to make a home out of your central heating and air conditioning system unit.

Both the birds and the bees have been major headaches when it comes to my central heat and a/c unit and me! At least once a year during the warmer times I have to call an exterminator to get rid of bees who decided to set up shop either on the side of, or inside my central heating and air conditioning system. That can actually get dangerous having that goin on. But even after having a solution for the bees by wiping em all out, you can’t get rid of the birds and them taking a dump on your central heating and air conditioning system unit! I do have a heart and would never want to kill innocent birds. After all, they’re harmless for the most and just want to live their lives like we do. So I ended up just going out an buying a tarp for my central heating and air conditioning system to keep the HVAC unit clean from them doing their thing. And then I just wash the tarp once a month. It is not an ideal solution, however, it works to keep my central heating and air conditioning system clean at the very least. Creatures of the world sure can be annoying!

I bet you may wonder how many heating and air conditioning companies are in a local city.

Well, maybe you don’t think of that or even care.

But I did. So I actually did some research on the matter looking into assorted cities and states across the country. I wanted to know how many heating and air conditioning companies verses heating and air conditioning contractors were in a city. And let me tell you, it was impossible to get a round number. It really varies from city to city and state to state. It all depends on the population of that particular city on how many heating and air conditioning companies and how many heating and air conditioning independent contractors are in each of them. In my area you have 3 different heating and cooling companies and 5 independent heat and a/c contractors. This is because I live in a big city, and here they like to give plenty of choices cause there are a lot of people around. That’s competition for ya. However, in a small Iowa town I looked up, they had all but 1 local heating and air conditioning company. Not even any independent heat and a/c contractors! It was the choice of one only, and if you didn’t like them, then tough! You were stuck with em. I would hate to live in that kind of small town madness to tell you the honest truth. I am happy being in the big city and having choices when it comes to who services all of my heating and air conditioning needs!

I really hate it when people, especially when it comes to business, can not give you a straight answer.

I had called my local heating and air conditioning company to inquire about how much a deep ductwork cleaning would be, and they could not give me an exact price! They danced around it by telling me that it all depends on how much cleaning needs to be done, etc.

In all fairness I understand that, but when I asked the local heating and air conditioning company to give me a rough ballpark figure, they couldn’t even do that! I said to even take it within a one hundred dollar range, they wouldn’t do that either. I got so frustrated with them, that I hung up the phone on em and called a local heat and a/c contractor instead. The local independent heat and a/c contractor was at least able to give me a rough estimate! That wasn’t so hard now was it? Why the local heating and air conditioning company could not even give me a ballpark figure on the deep ductwork cleaning just cost them a customer. Let this be a lesson to anyone in business that refuses to give a straight answer when asked a question. You may think you’re being slick, but all you are doing is risking losing business all together rather than 1 small job. Because now I will never ever use this heating and air conditioning company again for anything! The HVAC contractor gets my business moving forward for all my HVAC needs.

I shouldn’t have to tell you think as it is sort of a no brainer, but I think it still has to be said for the young generation out there.

And that is do not believe every single advertisement you see on TV or hear on the radio for products! A lot of times things are overblown and do not tell the truth. To give an example, I got suckered into buying this portable air purification system that they advertised on late night TV once. I won’t say the name, but i’m sure you know which one i’m talking about if you look at late night TV. Anyway, I bought this portable air purification system and it was the worst thing ever! It did not work nor clean the indoor air quality what so ever. To be kind, I could say the most it did was give the illusion of good clean air quality if you stood within 2 feet of the thing. Other than that, it gave no results at all. I ended up calling the toll free number back and demanding a refund after trying this thing out for a week. They tried everything to con me into keeping the portable air purification system or delaying the return to the point of the return time expiring. However, I knew what they were up to and wasn’t having any of it! I ended up returning the whole home air purification system to them and got my 30 day money back guarantee refund. I don’t know why they even offer that option. I would bet everyone on earth returned this thing!

Even for the people who love the cold, you are going to need a heating device

When I was younger, I had always dreamed of living in the northern states. So when I was older and had the opportunity to move out, I did. However, I did not expect moving out to be so difficult. I was still fairly used to relying on my parents for things, so the sudden transition of being all on my own was hard at first. Coming home and being alone all of the time was also difficult to adjust to. Anyways, one of the things I was not expecting was having to get used to the cold winters here. The summers are fine but the winters can be incredibly cold, and it is common for it to drop below freezing. I was raised in a state where it was rare to get below 30 degrees, nevermind in the negatives. Driving in the snow and ice is a whole other ordeal in itself, especially black ice. Anyways, I discovered so long as I keep my furnace up and running well, I will be okay. That was probably my first and most important lesson, making sure you have an operating heating system. This is the kind of state where you can’t live here without some kind of heating system. Even for the people who love the cold, you are going to need a heating device. Thankfully, my place came with a great heating and air conditioning system, so I never have to worry. There are some aspects I miss about living in the southern states, but so far, I am loving it here!

When I moved to a new city I was not expecting such horrible air quality.

The previous city I lived in was somewhere in between, not horrible where you were practically coughing just breathing in the air, but not really fresh air either.

The new city I moved to though, was on the extreme side of being badly polluted. This was really odd because I did a lot of reading on this city before I moved here, especially the cons. Pollution and bad air quality was never mentioned. I thought that maybe the indoor air quality of where I was going to be living might be better, but when I moved in. I was disappointed to still feel like I was suffocating on the air. I couldn’t help but to ask other people about it, and it turns out it is divided between two groups of people. Some people just get used to it and do nothing about it. Others buy whole home media air purifiers to cope with the awful pollution problem. I decided to go with the latter and buy a whole home media air cleaner. There was no way I could get used to this air, and I hope the air purifier will do a great job cleaning the air. When I received the air cleaner, I set it up and left home. When I came, I was surprised how much my home had changed! The air felt great and I felt like I could breathe for once. Thank God for those HVAC purifiers. Shocked by the pollution of this city, I decided to set up a fund for cleaning our environment in this city, hopefully it will take off and we won’t have such a bad pollution problem.
