The wind was blowing the fire out in the fireplace.

The wind had ripped the chimney cap off, plus it was laying in the yard

Living on the mountain; the two of us get a lot of strong winds. Occasionally it sounds like all the trees are splitting, however it is just the wind blowing through them. I like when there are downdrafts, but you can hear the apartment moving as the wind tries to lift it off the foundation. The downdrafts can also create mini tornadoes that twist the trees like a corkscrew, but last week, I was laying in the family room plus I could odor smoke in the air. I was sure I had closed the draft to let the smoke go up the chimney, however maybe I was wrong. I walked into the residing room plus saw the wind was blowing hard enough that it was almost putting the fire out. The wind was coming down the chimney plus whipping at the flames in the fireplace. It mesmerized me at first, but I knew it could be dangerous. I put the fire mesh in front of the fireplace, so the fire could not come out of the fireplace, plus after that the two of us called our partner. I asked him what I should do to keep the fireplace from going out, or the flames from leaping out of the hearth, he told me he was on his way home plus he would see what had happened! By the time he had arrived home, I already knew was happening. The wind had ripped the chimney cap off, plus it was laying in the yard. Every one of us needed to put the chimney cap back on, unless it was broken. I wondered if the landing could have broken the chimney cap, but I had more worries about the wind putting out our fireplace.
