The cabin was a fixer-upper, starting with the A/C

The great thing about being retired is finally having free time for personal projects.

I took an early retirement, because I wanted to be able to enjoy my golden years and not just sit in a retirement home or assisted living facility. My lovely wife Helen and I found a quaint, rustic log cabin just outside of town. It was far from perfect, but the location was perfect. The cabin overlooks a small lake, so that we can watch the sunrise over the water every morning. We decided to fix it up ourselves, starting with the cooling system. Actually the cooling system didn’t need to be fixed, because the cabin didn’t have one at all! When the cabin was first built, people in this area didn’t have air conditioners. In fact, electricity wasn’t added to the cabin until many years later. The heating system consists of a central fireplace, along with a small wood burning stove in the kitchen. This means the cabin has no ductwork, and it is impossible for us to get a central HVAC system. The simplest course of action was to buy a small electric air conditioner that we could plug into the wall. This is the cooling equivalent of a space heater, and although it isn’t very powerful, this cabin isn’t very big. Helen needs the A/C more than I do, so I let her pick out which one we would buy. Now that the heating and cooling systems are taken care of, we can sit back, relax, and enjoy our golden years.
