Family business

My whole family has been in the business of plumbing for many years.

In fact, it goes beyond my brother, father, and uncles, all the way back to my great great grandfather! He was the very first plumber in our family, and in the town where we all reside.

His original plumbing company is still open, and it is operated entirely by my family members. That’s why it was such a huge disappointment when I told my family that I wanted to go into the trade of heating and cooling system installation and repair, instead. When I dropped that bomb, they looked at me as if I had three heads. They couldn’t understand how I could choose heating, cooling, and ventilation over becoming a plumber like everyone else. I tried to explain to them that it was a solid trade, and I would always have work in the ventilation business because that was a constant human necessity, both at home and at work. I knew I could start up my own company with only 2-3 trained HVAC technicians, and we could start servicing the heating and cooling plans of nearby subdivisions in no time! For two years they refused to speak to me while I obtained my heating, ventilation, and air conditioning licensure, but the time came when they had to let me back into the family. That exact moment, in fact, was the mid-summer day that their plumbing shop air conditioner broke down. They had no one to call… except me. I showed up in my new HVAC repair truck, diagnosed the cooling system failure, and made the repair for them free of charge. That day, they realized that maybe there was a need for an HVAC tradesman in the family, after all.
