Air conditioning wasn’t working well in summer school
Even though teachers get the summers off, we do not get paid during that time. The majority of teachers work during the summer to make ends meet. I decided to work summer school last year. I figured it would be a good way to make some extra money and I love teaching so it didn’t sound like a bad deal. I do live in the south, but my assumption was that there would be central air conditioning in my summer school classroom. I am accustomed to air conditioning working in my school because the building I work in is newer. However, for summer school I was moved to the main building that was built over one hundred years ago. I got to my classroom and only had about an hour to set up before my students arrived. It felt warm at first, but I figured it was because I had to walk up the stairway that does not have air conditioning. It looked like the digital thermostat was on in my classroom. My students arrived and they were immediately complaining about the heat. I realized at that moment it was not just me who was feeling overheated. I called the main office and the secretary told me that all of the summer school teachers have been calling about their air conditioning not working as well. The secretary informed me that the HVAC company sent HVAC workers and they are on the way. I could not fathom that the school wanted to continue summer school classes without proper air conditioning. I did my best to teach even though the heat made me feel like I wanted to pass out.
