Stock Trading Floor Can Get Sweaty

If you’ve never been to a zoo before, visiting a busy stock trading floor at a big stock brokerage company will give you an idea of what it’s like.

When the stock market is open, the trading floor is the epitome of chaos.

Some people work best when they’re moving around, so there are people walking laps around the room. A successful sale, trade, or purchase can send people fist-pumping out of their seats and into the air. And everyone spends every moment of the trading hours talking. There’s a lot of action! All those bodies, all of the movement, and all of the talking require an A/C system that can keep up with the antics. Our building has an outstanding cooling system, and we get our money’s worth when we use it. We have an HVAC technician who makes regular visits to the trading floor to examine and maintain the system. She changes the air filters when needed, checks the ducts for leaks, and makes sure that all of our vents are working properly. A few years ago, the cooling system was acting up and the trading floor was miserable. Everyone was moving as little as possible and talking quietly to keep the room from heating up, but it was difficult to bear the heat. But, the stock market didn’t stop because of one brokerage firm’s broken air conditioning, so we kept working. Luckily, our HVAC technician showed up within an hour, so we didn’t have to suffer for long. She quickly identified the problem (a blocked drainage line), remedied it, and changed the air filter since she was there. We love it when she stops by the office, and we tell that story to every new trader when they start working on the floor!
