When we bought our new HVAC system, we had a full replacement warranty for the first year only. For the next two years, we received a partial warranty. When I asked what the full replacement warranty covered, they said it was a blanket warranty that would even allow us to get a new HVAC system for nothing should there be any problems. This sounded like a good idea to me, but I wasn’t a specialist on HVAC systems or warranties. All I knew was what my father said. You knew when the warranty ended, because the appliance broke down. I thought he was kidding, but I was soon to find out he wasn’t. We bought our HVAC system early in the fall, after we needed air conditioning and before we needed heating. They replaced all the ductwork, installed a new furnace, air conditioning unit, and an air purification system for the whole house. Two days after our warranty ended, the air purification system quit working. I called the HVAC company, and they sent an HVAC technician out to the house. He told my husband that we needed a new UV light, which we didn’t think would be too expensive, but the HVAC tech wasn’t done. When we turned off the air conditioning and were going without AC or heat, there was nothing to keep the air purification system running. It depended on the air conditioning or heating system to keep it running. I asked if it was possible to have it running independently, and he said the warranty was over and we would need to pay for that service.

Last year, my hot daughter and her husband invited her dad and I to go on vacation with them.

• She had found a four-bedroom houseboat for rent, and got it for a great price.

I wasn’t so sure about spending two weeks on a houseboat, but her dad was excited. By the time we left to go on vacation, my husband thought he knew everything about that houseboat. He had looked it up online and seen pictures of the bedrooms, the two bathrooms, and the kitchen and living room. He showed me pictures of the deck and of the HVAC system. He said there was no way he could be out on a river in the middle of summer without having air conditioning. They even had a ladder that led from the houseboat into the river so the kids could go swimming. I was already dreading spending two weeks in a houseboat when the time came. When vacation arrived, it surprised me to see that the houseboat had more modern amenities that our home had. My daughter looked around the kitchen and comment they had the exact ‌refrigerator she wanted. Another time it was the toaster oven was the same kind that she would like to have. Her husband told her she was on vacation, and should enjoy it. When we started looking for the air conditioning, we couldn’t find it or the thermostats. The houseboat was very stuffy inside, without air conditioning, and I didn’t think I could stay without AC. My daughter called the rental office and asked about the AC unit. They told her where she would find the remote control and said to point at the big box on the wall. We had ductless HVAC.

One of my favorite vacations happened last fall.

My husband and I were celebrating our thirtieth anniversary and wanted to spend it alone.

I had been looking online for some place special for us to go. I found a treehouse that was only 50 miles away from our home. I heard about treehouse vacation spots, but I didn’t know there were any in our immediate area. My husband drove all the way up into the mountains, but I made him put a blindfold on while I drove the last 10 miles. I wanted to surprise him with a treehouse. I thought his face was going to crack from smiling so big when he saw the place. We climbed 2 sets of stairs before getting to the outdoor patio. I had already called ahead to local grocers, and talked to the owner of the treehouse and asked if they would put the groceries in the refrigerator for me? I had to pay extra, but I didn’t care. The house had a new HVAC, a full bedroom with a full bath, and a kitchen and living room combined. The bedroom has three glass walls, so you could see the forest all around you. I was going to take a shower when I realized that there was no air vent in the bathroom for heat. I asked my husband if he had figured out how to turn the furnace on t, and he said the house would soon be warm. He came into the bathroom and was checking all the buttons and twist knobs that were right inside the bathroom door. He figured out that the exhaust fan also had a heating system.

My son was getting really excited about his birthday. He was turning 40, and we were all gathering together to go on a fishing trip. We chipped in to get an eight-bedroom home near Salmon Lake, and everyone was excited. No one but our daughter, who booked the home, knew what the house looked like. We didn’t have an address, but we knew it was near Salmon Lake. On the day we were to leave, my daughter had to work. She said everyone should head up to Salmon Lake, and she would join us when she got out of work. It was a beautiful four hour drive., but by the time we got there, we all had the same question. My daughter was the only one who knew the address of the house, and the code for getting into the house. I called to get the address from her, and then I had to call her back for the code. She had to call me back with the code after contacting the rental company. By the time we got into the house, we were freezing. We went in search of the HVAC system, but could find nothing. My son, being an HVAC technician, said that if anybody was going to find a furnace or some other ‌heating system, he was going to do it. It took him over an hour before he finally realized what was going on. He laughed until he had tears in his eyes, when he told us how stupid he felt. He said the HVAC system had been staring us all in the face and pointed up at the wall. It was not a traditional HVAC system, but a ductless HVAC system.

Although it was only July, we knew that if we were going to get a nice place for our family Christmas holiday, we would have to get it now.

I was worried that we should have secured our cabin last year, instead of waiting until July.

The only reason we waited was because my son was moving and he was hoping we could all gather at his place. When the move didn’t happen, we had to scramble to see where we could find a cabin near a ski lodge that would accommodate 20 people. I called every ski lodge within 100 miles, hoping to find a cabin or log house that would accommodate 20 people. There was only one available, and they said it was rustic. It had five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a hot tub. I was sure their rustic was talking about the way the house was decorated, and how it was built, but I wasn’t sure. When we got to the cabin, every room had a fireplace, but I didn’t see any heating system. It devastated me to think that we were on top of the mountain, had 6 inches of snow on the ground when we arrived with 10 more expected, and all they had was fireplaces. The fireplaces would not have been bad if there was wood stacked in or around the home, but there wasn’t any. I ended up calling the rental office, and inquiring ‌where to get the wood? She told me that the fireplaces were not there to be used, but left there for the rustic feel. She said there was a ductless HVAC system, and the remote for each room was on the mantel of the fireplace.

When my daughter and her partner bought their home, they chose one that had a fireplace. They lived in the southeast, and I couldn’t understand why a fireplace was so important. My daughter told me that fireplaces are romantic, and she thought it was perfect in the room where they had placed it. There were no windows except for the skylight, a large furry carpet in front of the fireplace, and a huge sofa. When she sent me pictures, I had to admit that the space was romantic, and very well used, but the temperatures seldom got out of the 50s, even at night. They moved in right before Thanksgiving and invited the entire family over for dinner. When my husband started poking around the fireplace, he told our daughter that they got ripped off. He said the fireplace was nothing more than a showpiece, and they wouldn’t even be able to use a gas or electric insert in the fireplace. My daughter looked stunned, and her partner was ready to argue. She told my husband that he wasn’t a fireplace expert, and all because he worked with HVAC did not give him the right to give a professional opinion. He already disliked my daughter’s partner and shrugged and told her that from now on he would keep his mouth shut. My daughter asked me what I thought about the fireplace, and I told her it was lovely. However, I knew what my husband was talking about when I got down on my haunches and showed her how the back wall was fake brick and they connected it to the wallboard in the hallway.

Being in the business of refurbishing and selling homes, I like to know everything about the house before I bought it.

I need to know that even after putting out the money for the home, and making all the structural and physical changes, I could still turn a profit. One of the most expensive items in the house can be the fireplace. If the fireplace is in excellent condition, they draw people in. They look at the romance before they even look to see if the fireplace is in a condition to heat the house, or just for ambience. When I bought my latest home, there was an old fireplace in the living room that was open in to the kitchen. The house was a Victorian home, with all the glamour that went with that period. When the inspector showed up to look at the house, I asked him about the condition of the fireplace. He did a cursory inspection and told me ‌it could possibly be repaired, but it could cost more than what I was planning on spending. Since it was a fireplace that heated two separate rooms, I thought it may be worth having it refurbished. If someone had told me that the fireplace was no longer usable because someone had cemented the chimney shut, I would’ve told them to just remove it. Now I am stuck deciding if I want to repair the fireplace and possibly install a gas or electric insert, or pay the cost of removing the fireplace and repairing the wall in the kitchen and the living room.

My wife and I were planning on moving back home.

We had been living in the Midwest for the last six years, and we were both homesick.

We were both born and raised in the Northeast, and we wanted to have the house ready for us before we arrived. We went on all the real estate sites and, after whittling the choices down to six different homes; we called the realtors who were representing these homes. They emailed us all the information that they had from the MLS listings and from their personal experience with the home. We ended up with pictures from each of the six homes, along with floor plans and information on the condition of the house and anything that may need to be done. We finally settled on one home that seemed to be perfect for our family’s needs. We put the down payment on the house and promised to have the rest of the money when we arrive for the closings. Until we actually had a copy of the deed in hand, we would not get to see the house. When we walked up to the door, it was everything we had dreamed a home should be. The only thing that was missing was an HVAC system. We asked the realtor why there was nothing in the listings about a missing HVAC system, and she appeared shaken. She thought they were joking when they said they were taking the AC unit with them, but she never thought they would take it and the furnace when they moved. Now we need to file a police report.

Before they moved into a senior living community, they signed the house over to my husband. They didn’t want to see it being sold at auction. We called a local HVAC company who was advertising free quotes for the installation and purchase of a new HVAC system. We actually put in phone calls to three different HVAC companies requesting free quotes, so we could compare. The first two HVAC companies were out of the area, and their prices were so far out of line that we knew we would not be working with them. When the HVAC technician from the local HVAC company showed up, he did measurements and everything that an HVAC tech was supposed to do. The only thing he didn’t do was the free quote. He had all the paperwork written up for the tonnage of air conditioning unit we needed, the furnace, all the new ductwork, and for a whole home air purification system complete with UV light. My husband asked him where the free quote was? He told my husband that since they were the only HVAC company in the area; he didn’t think we would talk to other HVAC companies and just assumed we would make the purchase. My husband was not happy with this assumption and called the HVAC company. We already knew we would use their services, but the HVAC technician wasn’t giving us a chance to make our final decision.

Long before I had dreamed of being an HVAC technician, I met the love of my life. I fell in love while still in elementary school, but was too young to act on it. I became a brute to her, only because it was the only way I could touch her. By the time I was in high school, I was irrevocably smitten and wanted to smash the mouth of every guy who talked to her. It took until I was getting ready to go to college before I asked her out and told her how I feel. It surprised me to learn she felt the same way. I asked her to marry me on our first date, and she accepted. No one seemed surprised when we announced our engagement and only surprised that it took us so long to realize we belonged together. I immediately change my mind about going to college, and told her was going to go to HVAC technical school instead. Her father owned the local HVAC company, and he often asked me if I would be interested in being an HVAC technician after I got out of high school. I had never really given the thought until I proposed to his daughter and realized I didn’t want to go to college. As soon as we announced our engagement, he once again asked me about becoming an HVAC technician. I already told her ‌I was going to go to HVAC technical school instead of college, and she was thrilled. There would be no long months waiting for me to come home from school so we could be together. Although we were young, we wanted to be married as soon as possible.
