My home was unfortunately one of the casualties. My family plus I were in the residence, but we thankfully had warning plus the lot of us were able to get to a safe location in the basement. The dining room plus the kitchen environment are the only parts left inside the residence. The streets are totally filled with garbage plus debris from the trees plus residences. I got up early this day in a hotel room, because my residence is gone. I made the choice to take a walk around town. I needed to see the destruction with my own eyes. I saw a ton of trees broken in half plus mailboxes scattered everywhere in the streets. One thing that caught my eye was an outdoor AC machine. The AC equipment was still connected to the hurricane proof pad. I suppose the winds must have been brutal, because the entire AC machine plus pad was resting in the middle of main street. After a little extra searching, I noticed a huge amount of different heating plus cooling machines around the streets… Entire dining room sets plus family room furniture was everywhere in the streets. It was the most terrible disaster that I have seen in fifty years plus I easily thank god that my family plus I all were able to survive. Others were not so fortunate when the tornado came through.

I needed to see the damage with my own eyes. I saw hundreds of trees broken in half and mailboxes scattered all over the streets. One thing that caught my eye was an outdoor AC unit. The AC unit was still attached to the hurricane proof pad. I guess the winds must have been extreme, because the entire AC and pad was sitting in the middle of main street. After more searching, I noticed a lot different heating and cooling equipment laying around the streets. Entire living room sets and bedroom furniture lined the streets. We have a really big great room in our house and it’s almost three stories high.

There’s a big open loft along with a wood burning fireplace and chimney made out of river stone.

It’s a beautiful room but we have a terrible time trying to keep the temperature comfortable there. The indoor air quality is okay there, but the heating and the cooling tend to escape the room on a very rapid basis. In the winter, I think it’s probably the worst time to be in that room because the place is freezing cold. Even when we have the central heating system running in the house and a nice big fire built in the fireplace, the great room is still always about ten degrees colder than the rest of the house. That’s a huge difference! Plus, I think all of the windows tend to make it feel colder in the room, too. I have often thought about just buying a couple of little electric space heaters to put into the great room to help keep the temperature warm enough for us to stand during the winter. But when you have a really nice, fancy, well decorated room like our great room is, you really hate to mess with the whole aesthetic of the place by putting a couple of ugly electric space heaters here and there around the space. That’s why I’ve been talking to one of our local heating and cooling companies. We actually have a guy coming out next week to give us some ideas on what we might be able to do to help with heating the great room more efficiently and economically.
