Moving during worst part of the year

I truly have all this in mind as I’m gearing up for a weekend of moving my heaviest belongings in the heat and humidity

I know, I know, some of this is my fault, however i could have pushed for a better solution, however but at the time, it just didn’t seem like there was another way to do things. I was getting out of a dangerous situation, and I thought I needed to take things slowly rather than agitate the situation. See, about two months ago I fled from an abusive relationship in a flurry of interest. I woke up one afternoon and things were frightening. I packed a tote and I left. I haven’t been back to the home since – namely, because I was threatened with police action if I attempted to regain my personal belongings… Now, the time has come. I finally get to reclaim all my stuff, then the only problem is, the moving date is in the middle of November! For those of you who don’t live in the deep south, the weather is freaking irritated at that time of year. The summer time heat and humidity is formidable and dangerous, to be totally honest. If you don’t have access to A/C at all times, there is a option of heat exhaustion or worse. I truly have all this in mind as I’m gearing up for a weekend of moving my heaviest belongings in the heat and humidity. I have some helpers coming, which should be a large help, however, all of my moving buddies are from the northern midwest, where the weather never gets as hot and irritated as it is here. I sure hope my friend and I all survive the large transfer next month; Worst case scenario, I know I kiss my personal belongings goodbye and transfer on with my hot modern life.

AC stopped; budweiser kept going

Well I just had the most interesting fifth of June of my entire life.

I never could have planned for such a wild ride or a fine time.

I’m definitely cheerful with how it all turned out though. This past week I went running off to the mountains with my friends to visit a poorly described family cabin. They told me it was a cool little lake house, but I actually had no idea what to expect when my friend and I arrived. My buddy and I drove about two hours north into the rolling green mountains, and hastily pulled off the interstate on a rougher road. The road went looping around through the mountainside, passed houses of all shapes and sizes. I entirely had no clue what was about to happen., and after that I arrived at the most charming lake dwelling in the world. The place is like a tree dwelling on the water. It’s a dream come true. My buddy and I spent the next multiple hours playing in the sizzling lake and having a few drinks.… Only to arrive back at the dwelling and find that the cooling system had quit in our absence. Apparently a sizable branch fell on the central AC system, and the whole thing was kaput. WE were pretty bummed considering it was over 100 degrees out at midday, however decided to make the most of it. It’s not like my friend and I were going to get an Heating & Air Conditioning serviceman out on the premises on the holiday, anyways. So my friend and I settled in. My buddy and I threw more budweiser in the freezer and laid back. After the sun set, the temperature finally dropped and my friend and I were able to sleep soundly. There’s no doubt that the ice cold budweiser helped, either.

Family business

My whole family has been in the business of plumbing for many years.

In fact, it goes beyond my brother, father, and uncles, all the way back to my great great grandfather! He was the very first plumber in our family, and in the town where we all reside.

His original plumbing company is still open, and it is operated entirely by my family members. That’s why it was such a huge disappointment when I told my family that I wanted to go into the trade of heating and cooling system installation and repair, instead. When I dropped that bomb, they looked at me as if I had three heads. They couldn’t understand how I could choose heating, cooling, and ventilation over becoming a plumber like everyone else. I tried to explain to them that it was a solid trade, and I would always have work in the ventilation business because that was a constant human necessity, both at home and at work. I knew I could start up my own company with only 2-3 trained HVAC technicians, and we could start servicing the heating and cooling plans of nearby subdivisions in no time! For two years they refused to speak to me while I obtained my heating, ventilation, and air conditioning licensure, but the time came when they had to let me back into the family. That exact moment, in fact, was the mid-summer day that their plumbing shop air conditioner broke down. They had no one to call… except me. I showed up in my new HVAC repair truck, diagnosed the cooling system failure, and made the repair for them free of charge. That day, they realized that maybe there was a need for an HVAC tradesman in the family, after all.

HVAC tech tried to pull a fast one

I swear, everyone is trying me lately.

I have had so many people try to scam me out of money on craigslist, on the street, and now in my own home.

Luckily for me, I was too knowledgeable to fall for their trickery. The scenario all played out last week, when I had my air conditioner inspected by a professional HVAC technician. The cooling system had been faltering for a few months already, and at that point it was barely producing any cool air. I would regularly hold my hand out in front of the air vents, and could only feel lukewarm air passing by. I knew that the system should still be in operation for another 5 years or so, but I had no clue what was going wrong with my air condition so I called an expert. I was less than impressed with this so-called ventilation expert when he arrived. He was dirty, late for the appointment, and wreaked of stale cigarette smoke. He spent maybe 5 minutes looking at my air conditioner unit, during which time he was largely playing on his cell phone. After that brief inspection, he tried to come in and tell me that the whole AC unit was on its last leg. He said it would break down once and for all any day now, and there was no way to predict exactly when the whole cooling system would go down. He told me the repair would be too expensive, and quoted me for a brand new, high end cooling system instead. I knew he was full of shit. I sent him away, and called another HVAC company immediately… but not before calling his employer and lodging an official complaint.

Foreclosed houses

My partner and I recently found a hidden pocket of amazing houses right near our neighborhood.

It’s not that our subdivision is terrible or anything, but the whole area is locked in a low-income demographic around here.

Most of the places are pretty standard for lower-middle class working families, so it was really crazy when we found these sprawling mansions only a few minutes away. We drove through the neighborhood and marveled at the properties, although we soon realized that most of the houses appeared to be run down. We started to notice funny details, such as clunky AC window units hanging out of a huge, picturesque front window. We also saw a ton of old ductwork and nasty, semi-deconstructed air conditioners and furnaces sitting around the sides of the houses. That’s when we realized that many of the homes had been foreclosed on, and therefore the residents had begun to take apart the home infrastructure for cash. They were ripping out copper wiring that was contained in the air conditioner and heating equipment, as well as the large aluminum panelling that was used for duct work. Clearly the residents couldn’t afford their large house payments, so they began to live without modern heating and cooling systems as a last ditch effort to keep a roof over their heads. It’s really sad, but I’m also quite interested in the cheap properties. I know it would be expensive to renovate one of those homes, including establishing updated air temperature control. I wonder how much it would cost to put a whole new HVAC system back in.

Read reviews for zone control, not trusting dealership

I knew that there had to be a catch.

I recently was exploring the new heating options on the market, and stumbled across a ton of information on radiant heated floors and zone controlled temperature control plans that really interested me. I mean, I had known about the option of these two advanced heating technologies before, but I had never considered them for my own home. The major factor that was holding me back from investing in my heating plan was the immense cost of having a whole new heating method installed, rather than utilizing the ductwork that was already inside the home. I knew that it was quite pricey to pay for the equipment, itself, on top of all the installation costs from the HVAC dealership. That’s why my attention was immediately drawn to the heating plans being offered from a brand new heating and cooling broker in town. They were listing prices for both the equipment and full installation that were easily half of their competitors. I knew that there had to be a catch. No one could do zone controlled heating or radiant heated flooring for these figures! It would put them out of business! That’s when I decided to research a little further and stumbled upon some user reviews for the HVAC service. Good thing I checked. I found out that the dealership actually tore old heating systems out of foreclosed homes and reinstalled them as brand new heating methods! To make matters worse, they employed ex-cons without valid HVAC certifications in order to save on installation costs! Well, now I know why they could ask so little for heating equipment and installation; they offered the bottom of the barrel.

Friend’s husband is technician

That’s how he managed to diagnose our failing central air conditioning plan without even coming out to see the system for himself! I was complaining to my friend about our spotty cooling service one day, just describing all the random hot and humid indoor air conditions we’ve been experiencing while the AC was supposedly running

Have you ever had an older, wiser person in your life tell you that “it’s all about who you know”? I know I heard that for many years, but never really understood what it meant until much later in life. As I’ve grown older, I’ve finally realized the truth behind this sentiment when it comes to finding a job, moving into a new house, or fixing up the one that you have. I’m very lucky to have amazing people in my life, and our associations have saved me a ton of trouble. For instance, my best friend’s husband is a certified heating and cooling technician at a local ventilation repair shop in town. He has been in the field of home temperature control for over 15 years at this point, so he really knows what he’s talking about when the topic of central heating and cooling systems comes up. That’s how he managed to diagnose our failing central air conditioning plan without even coming out to see the system for himself! I was complaining to my friend about our spotty cooling service one day, just describing all the random hot and humid indoor air conditions we’ve been experiencing while the AC was supposedly running. Her husband walked in the room and without pause, told me to have the refrigerant level inspected, the air filter replaced, and the fan blades carefully cleaned in the air conditioner unit. He handed me the card for his work intern, and said the young ventilation technician would do the job for free with the family and friends discount. Thanks to this social connection, I had my whole cooling system serviced for free, and my house is wonderfully cool and comfortable again!

Setting temperature in morning not appropriate by night

This weather is driving me up the wall lately.

  • Every hour of the day is a new and unique experience, as far as the outdoor temperature and air quality is concerned.

In the morning it may start out warm or cool, but within hours the air conditions have completely flipped the other direction. It’s really making my mornings difficult because I don’t know how to dress for the weather! I’m constantly either too hot or too cold, and I’m carrying around about 12 layers with me at all times just in case I catch a chill or need a cooler outfit. That’s annoying enough, but it doesn’t end there. I’m equally miserable in the evenings when I return home from work because the indoor air temperature is never appropriate by the time I get back. For instance, if the morning was quite warm, I will have left the thermostat set to the central cooling function. However, when the temperature steeply drops without warning around noon, my thermostat doesn’t get the message that it needs to recalibrate. I’m stuck at work and can’t do a thing to regulate the air quality at home. When I get back at night the whole house will be freezing cold, and I have to wait about 2 hours before the central heating system manages to bring the space back up to temperature. I know that the solution to this is to invest in a smart thermostat, so I could re-adjust the temperature control settings from work instead of worrying all day, but I’d rather just wait for the weather to pick a setting and stick to it.

New apartment is tepid upstairs, insulation

Whenever the dwelling inspector stuck his head up into the attic, he let us know that that present insulation was in disappointing shape.

I know I should not be surprised. I definitely should expect this, and should have no disadvantage feelings about this fact. However, I can’t help however to feel disgruntled and defeated with this most recent development. What’s going on, you ask? My upstairs level of my dwelling is ungodly hot. Again, however yes, I have lived in a dwelling with a similar floor plan before, and yup, the tepid air accumulation upstairs was exactly the same. I know I was naive to suppose that our air quality would be any different in this up-to-date home, however I believe I fell victim to wishful thinking… Rather than entering our brand up-to-date dwelling with the adequate expectation that our upstairs kitchens would constantly be ten degrees warmer than the rest of the house, no matter the thermostat settings, I actually hoped that a higher quality cooling system and dwelling construction would circumvent this air quality nightmare. Well, dreams don’t constantly come true. It turns out that our top floor is just as tepid and humid as could be. Sure, it doesn’t help that our AC unit is well over 10 years old, however I’m also pretty sure that the lack of attic insulation isn’t helping our cause either. Whenever the dwelling inspector stuck his head up into the attic, he let us know that that present insulation was in disappointing shape. There was little heat being trapped inside or outside of the dwelling with the 2 inches of old insulation present, and he suggested my nice friend and I have it updated right away for energy efficiency. Well, my nice friend and I had nice intentions in demanding that the seller updated the insulation, however they had their own ideas about energy expenditure! By that, I mean they spent as little energy as possible to install yet another layer of disappointing quality insulation. Now the dwelling is all ours, and our top floor is still as tepid as ever.

Houses with tall trees – AC disfigurement

I am so in love with the part that my nice friend and I live in.

I didn’t actually suppose I would like it here when my nice friend and I moved last year – truthfully, I expected the worst.

My old dwelling state was situated in the midwest, where the air temperatures varied from -10 to 110 throughout the year and life was truly difficult. Still, I was accustomed to the horrific weather patterns, continual feeling of survival, and flat farmland that surrounded me. Moving down south, I had numerous concerns about the heat and humidity that I would be experiencing instead. What I never considered about the area, though, was the prevalence of tall and dense tree cover. Not only do these tall forests provide a enjoyable deal of protection from the pounding summer time sun, however they are incredibly charming, but after living in one dwelling with the most amazing woodland views, I can never consider going back to flat and boring scenery again; However, there is one point where the big trees intersect with the need for AC in a terrible way; there is a big tendency for residential cooling systems to be disfigurementd by falling tree limbs. It makes sense, with so numerous big trees in our backyard, there are often branches falling down from the heavens and landing dangerously close to our cool air lifeline. In the past year, we’ve seen our AC system take at least 3 heavy blows from large limbs. Thankfully for us, the nice ole cooling unit has stayed fully operational, however she’s not looking so enjoyable these afternoons. I figure, if AC disfigurement is the tradeoff for having cooling, charmingly charming trees all around me, I’ll happyly take that air quality risk.
